Escavias’s project, which the work’s preface describes with a level of detail uncommon for the time and for this type of literature, represents a challenge in the face of the vast amount of information contained in the sources he drew upon. These form an impressive corpus, comprising a large part of the writings in the Romance languages dedicated, from the 13th century onwards and according to a wide variety of criteria, to the history of the Iberian Peninsula. Faced with this avalanche of information, the author applies consistent selection criteria as required by the educational purpose he assigns to his work. Indeed, the Reportorio belongs to a popularising tradition, with the particularity that the author does not seek to impart his own knowledge to his readers, but rather to share with them the material he gathers from the sources he uses. The most fascinating aspect of his undertaking lies, as much or more than in the production of a practical manual, in the process of compiling the work, through which today’s reader maintains an ongoing dialogue with its author. Behind the apparent reserve typical of a compiler of others’ texts, one perceives, in fact, the constant presence of a strong personality, one that was not daunted by a task that demanded many years of dedication.
